La novela Cerca de Jedenew con la que debutó Kevin Vennemann, una aproximación a un pogromo antijudío, y que Pre-Textos publicó en 2008, fue celebrada como la más “bella historia triste” (Die Zeit), como"el mejor texto literario publicado por un autor de menos de treinta años"(Süddeutsche Zeitung). Su segunda novela, Mara Kogoj, comienza allí donde acaba la primera y une al presente un pasado sólo aparentemente concluido: ¿Cómo y con qué consecuencias se interpreta la Historia, reprimida, recordada u olvidada?Mara Kogoj registra con su colega Tone Lebonja, en el marco de un serie de entrevistas acerca de la región de Carintia, entre otras, las declaraciones de Ludwig Pflügler, que se autoproclama periodista y patriota. Su interpretación antieslovena, cargada de odio, en torno a la historia de Carintia, especialmente de la guerra partisana al final de la segunda guerra mundial como relato de un permanente estado de defensa contra todas las fuerzas supuestamente antipatrióticas, afecta a los encuestadores –pertenecientes a la minoría carintio-eslovena– más de lo que en un principio están dispuestos a aceptar. Mientras que Lebonja permanece pasivo y calla, Pflügler domina la situación y exige explicaciones, hasta que Mara Kogoj toma las riendas y comienza a exponer una versión más acorde con los hechos que en realidad allí acontecieron.
